Since 1967, on or around Hans Christian Andersen's birthday, 2 April, International Children's Book Day has been celebrated all over the world, aiming to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children's books.
The celebratory day is co-ordinated by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), a non-profit organisation dedicated to bringing children and books together. Activities include writing competitions, announcements of book awards and events with authors of children's literature

On 2 April 2014 it will be International Children s Book Day, inspiring children to pick up a book and get reading!
April the 2nd was chosen to mark this day for young literature lovers as it's the same date as Hans Christian Andersen's birthday, the author of many famous children's stories like The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling.
Organised by the International Board on Books For Young People, or IBBY, the aim is to promote books and reading to young people. IBBY was founded in Zurich, Switzerland in 1953 and today there are 70 National Sections from all parts of the world.
During International Children's Book Day there will be a number of events held around the world, including writing competitions and talks from famous authors and illustrators.
While you might be familiar with well-known works like Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland, there is a whole host of fabulous children's books out there waiting to be discovered - not just by children but by adults who are young at heart too!
To find out more about the day and events happening near you, visit International Childrens Book Day website and pick up a book today!
July 31 calls to mind a poignant picture of Harry Potter celebrating his birthday solitarily. But on this day the Muggle world gaily celebrates the boy wizard’s existence, and the author’s too. (J.K. Rowling shares her birthday with her creation.)
The last book of the seven-part series — Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — was published in 2007, the film came in 2011. Rowling’s books, with their lessons on life, friendship and self-belief, became a part of young adulthood and their coinages — Gryffindor, Quidditch — part of everyday parlance.

National Book Week is celebrated every year to commemorate the birthday of first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The celebrations all over the country commence from Children’s Day i.e. 14 November and continue till 20 November. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru loved children. He envisaged a future where children will grow up in an environment of book reading and book buying. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru instituted National Book Trust, India on 1 August 1957 with an objective to spread the book- reading culture thereby creating a learning society. Since its formation, the Trust has been actively involved in the promotion and publication of books in all major Indian languages and for all age groups and segments of the society.
